Does a Kayak Need a Rudder or Skeg? What Each One Actually Does
Most recreational kayaks do not need a rudder or retractable skeg for ordinary sheltered paddling. A well-designed hull can track adequately on its own, and basic paddle strokes should remain the main way to control direction.

What is a kayak rudder?
A rudder is a blade mounted at the stern. It lowers into the water and pivots from side to side, usually through cables connected to foot controls.2

Why does a kayak turn into the wind?
