Why Is Water Coming Into My Sit-On-Top Kayak?
Water around the seat or footwell can surprise a new sit-on-top kayak owner. The first instinct is often to assume that the hull is leaking, but a small amount of water on the open deck may be completely normal. Sit-on-top kayaks have intentional drainage channels called scupper holes, and water can move both down and briefly up through them as the kayak settles under load.

Why sit-on-top kayaks have holes in the deck
Scupper holes are moulded channels that run from the open deck to the underside of a sit-on-top kayak. What scupper plugs actually do
Scupper plugs are removable inserts that temporarily close scupper holes. They can reduce water rising into the seat or footwell during calm paddling, particularly in cold conditions. Should you test the hull yourself?
Begin with the least invasive checks: clean and dry the kayak, inspect seals and fittings, and ask the manufacturer for the recommended leak-test method. Different hulls have different construction, vents and pressure limits.
Avoid pressurising the sealed hull unless the manufacturer gives a specific procedure. Excessive air pressure can deform or damage a kayak and may make a small problem worse. Similarly, do not apply sealant at random before locating the entry point, as this can hide the defect and make a proper repair more difficult.
If a controlled test confirms a leak, use only a material and sealant suitable for that component and hull. Structural cracks and damaged scupper tubes should be assessed by the manufacturer, retailer or an experienced plastic-repair specialist.
When to stop paddling immediately
Keep the kayak off the water if water is accumulating inside the sealed hull, the hull feels unusually heavy, a crack is visible, a scupper channel is damaged, a hatch or drain plug cannot be secured, or the kayak’s handling has changed unexpectedly.
Internal water adds weight and can affect stability and control. A leak that seems manageable close to shore may worsen with waves, repeated flexing or a longer journey. Do not make a coastal or open-water trip the place where you test a suspected leak.

Is it the kayak or the load?
Before assuming the hull is faulty, compare the combined weight of the paddler, clothing, equipment and any passenger with the product’s stated capacity. A heavily loaded kayak sits lower, which may make the seat area wetter even when the hull is sound.
Move heavy gear closer to the centre and distribute it evenly from side to side. Check that the bow or stern is not sitting excessively low. If the kayak remains overloaded for its intended use, a higher-capacity model is a safer solution than trying to plug every drain.
